It’s been a while between drinks, last time we caught up with Alex was back in 2004 at the original Max Fish bar on Ludlow Street in the LES, 11 years later we bump into each other at the same place all be it at the recently relocated Max Fish bar around the corner on Orchard street.
Needless to say, we had a lot of catching up to do with this New York legend.
Alex has achieved many profound achievements through his career so far, from running the Supreme store in the 90’s and helping create the foundation of the brand, to a cameo in the iconic Larry Clark film KIDS to recently publishing a book on skateboarding in NYC, titled Full Bleed.
As quoted by Alex “I decided to make this book to show people how NYC was our skatepark, because we never really had “skateparks" growing up in the city. The question everyone has always asked me has been “where do you skate in New York?”. I wanted to give thanks to the skaters, photographers and architects that have made NYC a beautiful place to skate. The book is a compilation of 30 years of skateboarding photography.”
Alex is a true pioneer of the NYC skateboarding way of life, his all-round loveable manner is what makes it such a pleasure to cross paths again after all these years.
Being the all round hospitable guy he is, Alex gave us the lowdown on his local NYC tips:
For lunch grab some Vietnamese food at Me Kong on 6th Ave and King Street (18 King). The steak is great there and so is the calamari!
Bread (on Spring and Mulberry) is great spot to grab some Italian food and fall in love with a waitress.
Max Fish and Epstein's bar for drinks and happy hour upstairs at The Standard Hotel is great too.
If you’re looking for skate shops – Alex suggests Supreme and Shut.
For a skate LES skate park is great – but the whole city’s a skate park.
These days if you want to find Alex on any given Sunday, he puts on Slappy Sundays NYC, starting off at Astor Place at around 2pm on Sunday afternoon and usually finishing up at Arlene’s Grocery for a few after skate drinks.
